Location and geographical values

Commune Wielbark is located on the border between two plains Mazurian and Kurpian. The area covers about 384 km2.The population is about 6800 inhabitants.
Net of settlements is a one big center-place Wielbark (about 2900 inhabitants), 34 small villages and settlements, from which only 4 have more than 200 inhabitants.
The region of Wielbark is very picturesque thanks to both its geographical location (the area is surrounded by forests, lakes and rivers) and interesting history. The most precious elements of cultural landscape are: quite well-remained built-up area of Wielbark. There are also many examples of old rural buildings and historical structure of the net settlement and very characteristic is landscape of outwash plain, which is dominated by extensive waterlogged meadows and closing horizon forests.

History
The most important dates in history of Wielbark: 21st July 1723- Wielbark received municipal rights as a result of royal restrict, since 21st January till 2nd February 1807 Napoleon quartered there with his staff, on January 1813 the Czar Alexander I visited Wielbark, waiting there for decision which concerned the alliance in war against France. Wielbark's vicinity (Karolinka) is the place where General Samson was buried, after his suicidal death. General was the opponent of Hindenburg in the battle, which took place in 1914. This battle was later described in German historiography as The Battle at Tannenburg. The town was also under the pressure of strong germanization politics. After The World War II, in 1946, Wielbark lost its municipal rights.

Monuments
Visiting commune Wielbark you have to pay your attention to a group of 19th century houses located on the market square; a group of Roman-Catholic parochial church (19th century Neo-Gothic); 19th century Evangelist-Augsburg church; a group of Roman-Catholic parochial church in Lesiny Wielkie; martial cemetery which dates from 19th century - one of the biggest, best preserved in a voivodship; monument of General Samson commemorating the Battle at Tannenburg (1914)- the region of forester's lodge Karolinka, near Wielbark.

Environment and tourism
The region of commune is incorporated into the system of protected areas, which are part of ecological shield of the country called Green Lungs of Poland (Zielone Płuca Polski). Canoeing routes on the rivers: Omulew and Sawica create very good conditions for the organization of canoeing trips.

Economy
Economy of commune Wielbark is strongly connected with exploitation of natural resources and is based mainly on agriculture and forestry. Small firms, which process wood, agricultural products, herbs, undergrowth and plastic materials function in this region.
