History
Before the Teutonic Knights' conquest the Dźwierzuty commune, as well as adjacent to it the communes making a part of the today's Szczytno district, was one of the components of Galindia, and subsequently a part of Szczytno public prosecutor's office designated for being allocated to chivalry in return for the merits for the Order. The donated knights were founding new renting villages on their own, as well as manor- houses, manorial farms and they also used to sell, exchange or even lose their estates. Thus the beginnings of the majority of the villages on the commune's area have their roots in the XIV - XVth century.
Dźwierzuty itself were created in 1374 as the seat of the von Wildenau's family. From the notes made it is known that as early as in 1383 there was a castle here and in 1399 a church. It is worth mentioning that the name Dźwierzuty itself was used by local Mazurian people and it is an old Prussian borrowing "Swersutten"adjusted next to Polish. In 1483, the first water mill was built and the very similar mill privileges were also in the possession of adjacent villages. It is just this tradition to which a contemporary Dźwierzuty's crest refers. In 1945 after war actings' finishing it has been observed a partial come back of former inhabitants both to Dźwierzuty and to other villages. It happens on a par with still raising intake of Polish people from Mazowsze as well as repatriates from the former Eastern Borderlands. It was just then when the Polish administration, education's structures were established. It is also the time of co-operative movement and plants' development. Beginning from January 1973 as a result of a new administration country's division Dźwierzuty became a seat of the commune.
