| Location, geographical values Szczytno is the furthermost town of south-east part of Warmian-Mazurian Voivodship, which is situated at two lakes: Domowe Duże and Domowe Małe. There are about 27 000 inhabitants in this area and it covers 10 kilometres.
History The beginnings of the town of Szczytno reach at least the period of the Middle Ages. The Teutonic castle was built in the mid - XIVth century in the vicinity of the old trade route that runs from the Baltic sea up to the South of Europe. The castle with its moat and rampart was located on the peninsula between the two lakes: "Sciten Minor" and "Sciten Maior" (from Latin). The name "Ortolfsburg" arose from the name of Teutonic commander, Ortolf from Trewir, who established a guardroom here. The name was changed later into Ortelsburg until the year 1945. Slavic population living in vicinity of this district, named the place: Szczytno (from the mentioned above Latin names of the lakes). In the second half of XIV century, beekeepers settled northerly from the castle and their hamlet gave origins to the village Bartna Strona. While developing very rapidly, the hamlet received the right to brew beer. From 1616 it was described as a town. In 1723 Szczytno received full municipal rights. Thanks to the marked spatial and population development, in 1818 the town became the capital of the district. Many schools and official buildings arose at that time. On the turn of the successive century a very important railway junction was built here. After the change of the administrative partition of the country in 1975, Szczytno was not a district town anymore. However, the number of inhabitants was rising persistently from 13 000 in 1961 to 27 973 in 1995. The development of the town was mainly caused by its location on the borderline of Great Lakes District (Kraina Wielkich Jezior). In 1975, an International Airport "Mazury" was activated in Szymany near Szczytno, as a result of rising interest of this region. After the next administrative partition of the country on 1st January 1999, Szczytno became the seat of district Szczytno and a part of Warmian-Masurian Voivodship at the same time.
